South Africa is a magical destination with so much diversity – anyone can find something to enjoy. From the dramatic vistas, craggy cliffs, unspoiled nature reserves, South Africa is a scenic beauty.
Whether you take a more active approach and hike up, or enjoy the panoramic views up the cableway, Table Mountain is well worth a visit, and it just may be the most recognizable natural landmark in South Africa. On a clear day, you will enjoy spectacular views across the city center and Table bay, down to the beaches of the Atlantic seaboard and south towards Cape Point. As you’re enjoying the views, keep an eye out for the friendly and adorable hyrax that live on Table Mountain. They remind me of chunky guinea pigs.
Speaking of unspoiled nature reserves. I think it’s safe to say many who come to South Africa will visit a wildlife area. A South African safari is unlike anything else. Every waking moment is an adventure in and of itself. Heading out on an early morning game drive deep in the bush, you may stumble across a playful herd of elephants. Watch how elephant calves play and push each other and get on mom’s nerves. Admire the long, luscious lashes of a nearby elephant grazing on the shrubs and be captivated by their interactions with each other.
There are many national parks, game reserves both large and small that are home to South Africa’s wildlife and the famed Big Five: African elephant, lion, leopard, Cape buffalo, and rhino.
Kruger National Park is South Africa’s flagship national park. The southern region of Kruger has many lions, while the north is known for large herds of elephants and buffalo. With so many lodgings options Kruger is a great place for first-time safari goers.
If you’re looking to mix up your trip a bit and add something else to your safari, I would highly recommend several days in/around Cape Town. Exploring the city and learning about the roots and culture, heading out to the winelands for some delicious wine and food pairings, and for the more adventurous travelers, a shark cage diving experience, that cannot be missed!
South Africa is such a special destination and one of my personal favorites. As I mentioned before, there is so much diversity both in its people, landscapes, and activities. If you have not yet been, you must. If you’ve been before, you must go back. There are a thousand and one ways to experience South Africa!
