Travel the
South Island
Where Adventure Awaits in Every Landscape
The South Island is where you’ll find the most extreme scenery in all New Zealand. Deep mirror lakes, staggeringly tall mountains, glaciers descending into the rainforest set against the Tasman Sea, fabulous wine, delicious food, rugged coastline, and an untamed beauty. We could go on and on, but no matter where you go on the South Island, around every corner is something more stunning and more beautiful than the turn before.
A NOTE FROM THE EXPERTS
You really need a week or more to explore the South Island, but you could easily stay for much longer. From the food and wine of the Marlborough region to the spectacular beauty of Fiordland, the wildlife on the Otago Peninsula to the coastline of the Abel Tasman National Park, there is something here for everyone, regardless of your interests or age.
UNIQUE EXPERIENCES
If you only have time to visit one place on the South Island, it must be Queenstown. From Queenstown, day trips to Milford Sound, wine country, and Lord of the Rings filming locations are all available, along with a wide variety of the adrenaline activities New Zealand is known for, including jet boating, bungy jumping, whitewater rafting, sky diving, zip lining, helicopter excursions, mountain biking and more. Queenstown has something for everyone, no matter what type of traveler you are.
OUR FAVORITE TIME OF THE YEAR TO GO
The best time to visit New Zealand’s South Island is during the summer months of December to February when the weather is warm, and outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, and exploring the stunning landscapes are at their peak. Additionally, visiting during the shoulder seasons of spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) offers pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and vibrant scenery, making it an ideal time for outdoor adventures and sightseeing.
INSIDER TIP
If it is your first trip to the South Island, from Queenstown you should drive up the west coast and see the glaciers by foot, helicopter, or ski plane. Continue on the legendary TranzAlpine Train to Christchurch. If you have time, head up to Nelson to visit the Abel Tasman National Park and explore the local vineyards, studios, and galleries in the area.
