While summer travel may be on hold for now, it’s never too early to start planning for an Antarctic adventure. The sailing season to Antarctica goes from November to March and spots fill up quickly, with some travelers planning 1+ years in advance.
Esplanade clients Eloise and John P. are lucky enough to have now visited Antarctica twice! After an amazing trip this past season focusing on penguin viewing, Eloise sent along some lovely pictures and notes about her trip. Enjoy reading about their voyage to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and Antarctica.

Eloise and John describe their experience with Hurtigruten as wonderful. As Eloise remembers, “We had an awesome trip with Hurtigruten! I got to see my king penguins!” A nice touch with Hurtigruten is that their suite onboard came with complimentary laundry, wine, beer and gifts.
They crossed the Antarctic Circle and went around the Horn. “Seas calm, made all landings possible but I think one or two.” Of course they also traversed infamously treacherous Drake Passage. Eloise jokes that for their trip it was the Drake “Lake,” not the Drake “Shake!”
Possibly the best part of the trip? They got to see penguins! In fact the largest colony of penguins is on South Georgia Island. They also saw fur seal pups, elephant seals, albatross chicks, chin straps, and more icebergs.
