Kenya & Tanzania
If this is your first trip to East Africa, you will find wonderful game viewing opportunities on either side of the Kenya/Tanzania border. Arrive in Nairobi and stay out near the Ngong Hills reminiscent of Out of Africa. Go north to Samburu, surrounded by tea plantations, and try to spot a rare black leopard before traveling to the Masai Mara, Kenya’s finest game viewing area with huge lion populations and other predators. This area is more game-rich now than it was 100 years ago. Meet the Maasai people and stay in tents, and here your game viewing will be from open vehicles.
Continue to Tanzania’s Serengeti, home to the great migrations and to the Big Five: lion, leopard, Cape buffalo, elephant and rhino. Stay on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater and marvel at the masses of game on the crater floor. Go out to Olduvai Gorge where ancient human fossils and tools were found by Leakey and, before returning to Kenya, visit Lake Manyara with its tree-climbing lions. Close out your Tanzanian adventure in Arusha and take in the awesome sight of Mount Kilimanjaro, one of the Seven Summits soaring to over 19,000 feet.
There is plenty to see for repeat visitors, too! The vast plains of the Selous in Tanzania with gorgeous lodges that will make you want to stay a month…exotic Zanzibar with spice markets, beautiful beaches, snorkeling and diving…small game lodges where you are the only people the animals will see.
