THE PARCHED KALAHARI (4 days)
The Kalahari Desert penetrates the arid woodland of northern Botswana, producing typical Kalahari scenes of shimmering mirages, springbok herds, stately gemsbok and regal black-mane lion. All this can be seen on the fossilized grasslands and pan system of Nxai Pan National Park, along with the historic Baines' Baobabs. The dry season animal concentrations are enjoyed on drives that explore the areas surrounding the shallow pan systems and isolated waterholes. Islands of stunted acacia dot broad savannah and provide shade for predators such as cheetah and lion, while specialized species as diverse as meerkats and springbok thrive on the plains.
